Redirect all zh-* variants to zh
The Translate extension disables all zh-* variants in favor of zh, as specified in $wgTranslateDisabledTargetLanguages
(see phab:T39338). So if a zh-* variant is selected as the user language, Template:Main page/zh should be displayed. This can be handled similarly to how it's done on Wikidata (see the source code of d:Wikidata:Main Page). Stevenliuyi (talk) 07:30, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
- But how would you deal with concrete term differences? The terms differ dramatically in China, HK, and Taiwan. MilkyDefer 09:51, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
- LanguageConverter is actually available on all zh translated pages, enabling the use of
-{}-
syntax and allowing variant changes on pages like Template:Main page/zh. The issue here is that when the translated page is transcluded, the variant cannot be changed anymore. I think this issue can be tackled by using mw:Template:LC zh, as done on mw:Template:Main page/zh. Stevenliuyi (talk) 15:29, 12 August 2023 (UTC)

Sister projects
I created a sandbox where the links are in a grid style layout with larger icons and font size to make it easier to navigate. This design is similar to commons: and en:. Thoughts on adding to the main template? Terasail[✉️] 16:38, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

Glossary link
The Glossary was moved from Meta here, so the Glossary link should now go to Special:MyLanguage/Wikifunctions:Glossary instead. Mormegil (talk) 07:37, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

Descriptions for links to other projects
At the moment I see above the links to the other projects at the lower end of the main page the following text: "Wikifunctions is part of the non-profit, multilingual, free-content Wikimedia family.". I prefer a more neutral one that is for example used at English Wikibooks: "Wikibooks is hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, which also hosts:". When I think about usages of the name family I think about companies who are also sometimes using this name to describe the collaboration of the people and the atmosphere at their company. So I have bad associations with this name as there are companies who are using this name where I do not agree with the way how they treat their employees. What do you think about this alternative name.--Hogü-456 (talk) 20:59, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Hogü-456. The same wording is used Wikidata and Commons. I understand the perspective about companies who misuse the term, but we've used "family" for the collection of wikis for decades! (see also "sister project"). See also related usages such as m:Tree of Wikimedia wikis by language family. Personally, I also believe we should be careful to not let people who mis-use a term, take control of that term. I hope that helps. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 21:18, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

Background, translations, video, and content
Background context: We started the project off with a relatively simple design and content for the Main Page. It was drafted on beta-Wikifunctions (and help requested in the Newsletter), with some great additions from @Terasail, and a lot of inspiration from Wikidata's Main Page. I used the MediaWiki Main Page structure as the basis for it, because that had semi-recently been overhauled so I knew the code was uptodate, and it was properly translatable, plus the aesthetics were minimal. [I like "minimal" personally, and I didn't want to impose any particular aesthetic on the page]. So far, it's seems to be generally working out. I suggest keeping that overall structure and aesthetic for now [partly because I've been through many complex and frustrating redesign processes for Main Pages over the years!], but it's up to you.
Note: Translations: It is now possible to translate Template:Main page! Sorry for the delay with marking that up. (I was having trouble getting them to display properly yesterday, and was going to ask for your help today, but @Ameisenigel noticed and fixed it. Thank you!)
Question: Video (and other possible content additions): I'd like to add File:Wikifunctions in 7 minutes.webm (with its translatable captions) into the Main Page, because I've seen many people remark ~"Oh, the project makes a lot more sense to me after watching that!". I think it is helpful for people who prefer learning via video/audio to have it easily discoverable, and Outreach: wiki has done this for years. But I'm not sure where to locate it within the page layout. Do you have any thoughts/suggestions? Perhaps the page needs a new content-block to balance it out (it uses a 2-column design in larger windows), or just generally? E.g. "Communication" as Wikidata has? Or something else?
I hope these notes help. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 18:57, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- The sister projects are not translatable but in template references that aren't defined in the call. I'd rather have them marked in Template:Main page so all translations can be found in one place.
- Since the multilingual projects handle their main pages differently, the Commons, Wikispecies and Meta links need to be translated, whereas Wikidata, Incubator and MediaWiki do not. /Autom (talk) 19:42, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- Ah, thank you. Done
- For the labels: I think I've done so in the most efficient way. I was tempted to use the wikimediaprojectnames from translatewiki for the names of the 6 multilingual projects, but as you wrote it's probably best to keep them all in one place to avoid confusion.
- For the links: I've added e.g.
b:{{int:lang}}:
to the monolingual projects to save translation effort. There's probably a better way to format that so that the English version doesn't link tox:en:
, but it should work for now. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 21:08, 11 August 2023 (UTC) - (I see the error, looking now...) (Fixed.) Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 21:10, 11 August 2023 (UTC)

Wikiversity logo changing request
{{edit request}} Hi, I wish replacing the Wikiversity logo in the template by this logo : [[:File:Wikiversity logo 2017.svg]]. The reason is that the actually used logo in the template was replaced 5-6 years ago by a new logo in the wiki. Regards, Manjiro5 (talk) 12:28, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
