I am requesting IA today since I came across phab:T342937, the change should probably not be in MediaWiki:common.css but that isn't what is important here. With my current understanding of js/css I think that I can help out with any similar problems that are reported while also being able to help out with any gadget / userscript related issues that may occur. I have experience with the sysop toolkit and would like to help with the maintenance and patrolling of this project. Now that the project is in "General Availability" there will likely be more new users and thus more cases where tools are needed to maintain the wiki. I'm happy to answer any questions. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 09:49, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

I'm not a sysop anywhere on Wikimedia sites for now, however as an experienced user (and a noob developer) of MediaWiki, I know the ins-and-outs of MediaWiki software, including sysop toolkit. Given that our project has entered "General Availability" phase, more vandalism have taken place (yeah, I found that in block logs), and this is the case where tools are needed. I can also manipulate AbuseFilter / TitleBlacklist to fight against disruption. Lastly, I'm online most of the time (sometimes on Wikidata or elsewhere tho), whenever you need my input, feel free to invoke me! -- U.T. 02:18, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
Let me make a single reply for you all. Though you're calling in reasonable questions, I have some considerations else.
  • @Nikki, it's true that I'm mainly adding translations in many sites, but you omitted something important on zh. I won't blame you (and anybody) for this: after all, Chinese is difficult enough for many, and it's normal not looking into there. Beside from translating lengthy articles, I'm actively engaging in blocking / deleting / filtering requests, and understand about these processes (for instance, what would qualify a sysop action). Also, vide my global account info: most of the sites on which I only made 1 edit and none is visible now are speedy deletion requests, typically cross-wiki spamming. For countless times, I saw (most of the times, obvious) needs for sysop actions, but nobody is responding after placing a request at appropriate place. IMHO that's different from "hat collecting": I sincerely willing to do more (or make faster response) for our projects, and I won't request permissions that I have no chance to use. An example: I have no valid reason to request sysop access on a site I have no activity and in a language I don't understand at all, it would be "hat collecting" otherwise.
  • @Terasail Translations for interface messages is indeed an issue, but it's an non-urgent one. See current translations for almost all of pages, is there really anything complete at the moment? But it doesn't matter for project's functioning for now. What is important is that something should in place at first, and marked for translation, everything else for countless translators (including me). Importing existing translations can make this process even more efficient.
  • @Lucas Werkmeister I wouldn't be aggressive while taking sysop actions: everything should be done on request, if there's no obvious needs, no actions. I'll be "reactive" rather than "proactive", which can avoid errors.
  • @DannyS712 My statements on these concerns are as above.

Oppose Oppose I find the discussion that we had on the WF Telegram about editing in the MediaWiki namespace and Abuse Filters concerning. You brushed off the idea of translating interface page changes, when there can be 350+ translations of a page as a non issue. Your knowledge expressed there appears to directly contradict the statement "I know the ins-and-outs of MediaWiki software, including sysop toolkit" and makes it seem that you will dive head first into areas which could impact a large number of users without fully knowing the potential repercussions of such actions. Terasail[✉️] 17:25, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
  • Oppose Oppose Could you explain how you know the ins and outs of admin tools if you're not an admin anywhere? Your contributions both here and to other projects that I can read mainly seem to be adding translations, with hardly any discussions with other people, so I don't have enough evidence to say I can trust your judgement when using admin privileges. - Nikki (talk) 16:50, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
Also, you seem to be requesting extra permissions in a lot of places (I found 3 requests on mediawiki.org, 1 on Meta-Wiki, 1 on Wikidata, 1 on Commons, 2 here, plus a request to be made an admin of a large Telegram group), which makes it seem like you're hat collecting. - Nikki (talk) 16:56, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
  • Oppose Oppose From the interactions I’ve had with this user so far, I’m afraid I don’t trust him with administrator tools. --Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 21:25, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
  • Neutral Neutral in addition to what has already been said, do we really have "more vandalism"? I may be wrong but I looked at Special:RecentChanges and didn't see much... (and nothing that points to a need of more admins). Cheers, VIGNERON (talk) 15:37, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
Maybe not much at the moment, but there would surely be in the long term - just like other Wikimedia sites. -- U.T. 03:52, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi! I'm Mdaniels5757, and I'd like to re-gain my adminship here now that I will have more time to use it! I am also an admin on Commons and have a hodge-podge of other rights on enwiki and other wikis (list). I was previously granted adminship here by decree, and it expired early last month. I hope that I will be trusted again and be able to help out more with the tools. Best, —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 22:50, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
