Ignore precision?

I’m not convinced we can ignore precision. When one time period lies wholly within another, it can’t meaningfully be described as “later”, can it? It seems particularly odd to call February 1925 later than 1925, when January 1925 is not.

I’d suggest that one time period is “strictly later” only if it begins after the other has ended, although common sense allows that a period starting exactly when another ends may still be considered “later” (particularly when periods are expressed as a start time and duration/precision).

On the other hand, I suppose “Wikidata time starts after” can safely disregard the precision, although the idea of a time having a start does sound rather odd. GrounderUK (talk) 13:37, 16 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
