Why article-less?

Hi @Jdforrester (WMF), @99of9, @Dv103,

Sorry to disturb, I do not understand why the function is named 'article-less'. In 'The Sun is a star', The is an article, right?

Thanks in advance for the explanation. Ornithorynque liminaire (she/they) (talk) 21:20, 3 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

It's called "article-less" because it was named by someone thinking in terms of the grammatical features involved rather than the underlying semantic relationships. In English, most sentences of the form "specific entity is an instance of a class" do not start with an article, whereas most sentences of the form "class of objects are a subset of a class" do start with one.
